Can you imagine that your entire home can get power by a lithium  ion battery and not by regular electricity supply? well in a random opinion how can a battery pack can supply enough power to run a house appliances, this is tricky but now in this era it is possible.

A marvellous invention has taken place, which is made by the famous electric cars manufacturing company , which is known as Tesla Motors.


The Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium ion battery product manufactured by Tesla Motors for home use. It stores electricity for domestic consumption, Load shifting, and backup power.

Announced in 2015, with a pilot demonstration of 500 units built and installed during 2015, full production of the product is not expected until a large factory in Nevada, Gigafactory, is completed and commissioned in 2017.

Tesla started development in 2012, installing prototypes at selected industrial customers. In some cases, PowerPacks have saved 20% of the electrical bill.

The Powerwall was originally announced at the April 30, 2015 product launch with power output of 2 kW steady and 3.3 kW peak, but Musk said at the June 2015 Tesla shareholders meeting that this would be more than doubled to 5 kW steady with 7 kW peak, with no increase in price.

He also announced that Powerwall deliveries would be prioritized to partners who minimize the cost to the end user, with a Powerwall installation price of US$500.

The 10 kWh battery as originally announced has a nickel-cobalt-aluminum cathode,like the Tesla Model S car, which was projected to be used as a backup/uninterruptible power supply, and had a projected cycle life of 1000–1500 cycles.


After March 2016, there is only a single model: the 6.4 kwh version for daily cycle applications (US$3,000)

Technology Behind the Powerwall

The Powerwall is optimized for daily cycling, such as for load shifting. Tesla uses proprietary technology for packaging and cooling the cells in packs with liquid coolant.

How it Works?

A typical Powerwall system includes solar panels, an inverter for converting electricity between direct current and alternating current, a meter for measuring battery charge, and in backup applications, a secondary circuit that powers key appliances. Which components are required depends on how you use your home battery.

  • Solar panels

    Panels convert sunlight into electricity that charges Powerwall and powers your home during the day. Without solar, Powerwall can reduce time of use power bills by strategically shifting energy consumption.

  • Powerwall

    The home battery is charged with electricity generated by solar panels or from the utility grid.

  • Inverter

    The inverter converts direct current electricity from solar panels, the grid and Powerwall into the alternating current used by your home’s lights, appliances and devices.

    All Powerwall installations require a compatible inverter. To maximize solar consumption, a meter is also installed to measure solar production and home energy use.

  • Electrical Panel

    Electricity from the inverter is sent to your home’s electrical panel. For applications without solar, and night time, electricity generated by the power company is sent from the electrical panel to the inverter to charge the Powerwall.

  • Backup panel and switch

    Some backup installations may require a secondary electrical panel containing the critical appliances and outlets you wish to back up. An electrical switch automatically activates the backup panel during a power company outage.

    When installed with solar, this switch can keep your solar producing during an outage. Backup is an optional feature when installing to maximize solar or shift energy consumption.

The daily cycle 7 kWh battery uses nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry and can be cycled 5,000 times before warranty expiration. The Tesla Powerwall has a 92.5% round trip efficiency when charged or discharged by a 400–450 V system at 2 kW with a temperature of 25 degrees, and when the product is brand new.

Age of the product, temperatures above or below 25 degrees Celsius, and charge rates or discharge rates above 2 kW would lower this efficiency number, decreasing the system performance.

It includes a DC-to-DC converter to sit between a home’s existing solar panels, and the home’s existing DC to AC inverter. If the existing inverter is not storage-ready, one must be purchased.

Well the first version of  Powerwall has a 6.4 kWh capacity for daily cycle applications. For families with larger energy needs, multiple powerwalls can be connected to expand the capacity even higher. A previously announced 10 kWh capacity model was quietly discontinued in March 2016.

The second version of Powerwall is a much bigger unit with 100 kWh of storage for commercial use. In order to meet the variety of energy needs in industry, “Powerpack is infinitely scalable”, said by Elon Musk.

Tesla’s objective is to “fundamentally change the way the world uses energy” by “fostering a clean energy ecosystem and helping wean the world off fossil fuels” using backup energy storage for renewable energy.

Well this is  quiet a intresting awesome invention, but we think for taking place in regular use of this invention will be quiet far thinking, But cause it is an eco-friendly and power saving device then it must be reliable to use in households or commercial purpose.
